FOCUS
Screen 1 of 2

FOCUS is a completely separate decision from EXPLODE.

FOCUS will restrict your search to those citations in which the subject heading (MeSH term) is considered the focus, main topic, emphasis, or major point of the articles.

There are two ways to approach the decision about whether to FOCUS your search:

  1. If there is a lot of literature on your topic click on Focus.

Using the Focus command will retrieve fewer articles, but these will emphasize the subject rather than simply mention it as a peripheral or secondary topic.

  2. To begin with a broad search strategy or comprehensive search do not Focus.

Important Note:

Never Focus country names or geographic regions. Avoid Focusing if your topic is new, rare, or does not have a lot of literature to represent it.
