EndNote and Ovid
EndNote And Ovid
Preparing Citations in Ovid
- While in Ovid, select
the citations to be placed in EndNote by clicking the check box next to the number (if you want to send everything on the page, or from a search result set, you do
not need to select the individual citations).
- Find the blue "Results Manager" box, located in between the search box and the results.
- Under the column
"Results", choose "Selected Results". You also have the options to send everything on the page or everything in the search result set.
- Under the column
"Fields", choose "Complete Reference".
- Under the column
"Result Format", choose "Direct Export".
- Scroll up to the
"Actions" sections right under the "Results Manager" title and click "Save".
- At this point, you have two options, depending on whether you are working on a computer with EndNote -
import directly, or save for later.
Importing Directly from Ovid
- Follow the directions above for preparing the citations in Ovid's Results Manager
- When you click save, a Dialog Box will appear.
Choose "Open with Web Export Helper". This will import these records
directly into EndNote. (If EndNote is not running, this process will
open it up).
- Choose the library
into which the citations will be placed.
- The "Importing"
status bar should show a series of green (EndNote X or XI) or blue (EndNote
9) bars indicating that the records are being imported successfully.
- After importing the records from Ovid, at first only these most recent records
will appear in the EndNote library window. Go to the "References" menu in EndNote and select
"Show All References" to see everything in the library.
Saving citations and Importing to EndNote Later:
- Follow the directions above for preparing the citations in Ovid's Results Manager
- After you hit save, choose "Save to disk"
- The file will
appear on the computer with the title Ovidweb(#), with # representing
the number of these files on the computer.
- This Ovidweb file
will need to be imported manually into EndNote.
- In EndNote, click
on the "File" menu and choose "Import".
- In the "Import
Data File" box, use the "Choose File" button to browse your computer,
looking for the Ovidweb file.
- Under "Import
Option", choose "MEDLINE (OVID)". The last few that have been chosen are displayed by default.
If "MEDLINE (OVID)" does not appear, choose it under "Other Filters"
- The "Duplicates"
option allows users to discard redundant records (if they exist) before
importing.
- The "Text Translation" option can be used when working with certain symbols and alphabets.
- Click "Import".
- Once again, the
green or blue bars should appear in the "Importing" status bar.
If they do not appear, the incorrect filter was likely chosen. NOTE:
When importing files manually, the proper filter must be chosen or the
records will not be brought into EndNote. This is done automatically
when databases are searched from a computer where EndNote is installed.
