The Alumni Medical Library is pleased to announce that SAM Online, the World Wide Web version of the popular clinical textbook Scientific American Medicine is now available. Scientific American Medicine is an innovative medical textbook which is continuously updated by leading physicians. Published since 1978 in loose-leaf format, SAM was created to serves as a useful resource for guidance on clinical decision-making, and to provide health care professionals with the medical knowledge of top experts from leading universities in North America. SAM provides current, comprehensive, and complete medical information, covering all 15 subspecialties of internal medicine.
The printed, loose-leaf version of Scientific American Medicine is available in the library Reserve area, which is located behind the Circulation desk. The print version of SAM is updated monthly. SAM Online, which is continually updated on the WWW, will replace the CD-ROM version, which was formerly housed in the library LRC.
SAM Online contains nearly all of the illustrations, pictures and graphics available in the print version. A small number of illustrations -- under ten percent -- have been omitted because of copyright restrictions. Scientific American, Inc. is currently developing new illustrations to replace those that have been omitted.
Most faculty, staff and students of the Boston University and Boston Medical Center are eligible to use SAM Online. Because of licensing agreements with the software producer, access is restricted by I.P. address (an Internet Protocol address identifies your machine's location on the Internet):
