New PubMed "LinkOut" Feature Connects Searchers Directly to Boston University's Journal Holdings

PubMed, the National Library of Medicine's Web-based MEDLINE search system now includes the convenient LinkOut feature. LinkOut allows searchers to access Boston University's electronic journal collections from PubMed. For journals that are not available electronically, LinkOut displays the Alumni Medical Library's printed journal holdings.

Regular PubMed searchers know that PubMed displays electronic journal icons for journals that require fee-based subscriptions or can not be accessed by everyone. With the LinkOut feature, you will see electronic journal links ONLY for those journals that BU subscribes to or are available free-of-charge to the public.

To use LinkOut, access PubMed with this URL: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=bumcamlib

Once you have accessed PubMed using the special URL, do your search as usual. When citations are displayed on the "Summary" screen, simply click on the "Abstract" or "Citation" display options. You will then see the Alumni Medical Library's online article or printed holdings icons:

Online Button Print Collection Button

These icons are only visible for journals in the Alumni Medical Library's print and electronic collections AND only if you are accessing PubMed using the LinkOut URL. Those users accessing PubMed from the general "pubmed.gov" URL will not benefit from the Library's LinkOut feature.

A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide to LinkOut is available on the Web at http://www.medlib.bu.edu/library/pubmedlinkoutfaq.html.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

MEDLINE searchers should be aware that PubMed does NOT include the full text of 115 core, clinical, biomedical electronic journals that the Alumni Medical Library subscribes to via BUMC MEDLINE Plus/OVID. Because of licensing agreements between OVID and the publishers, 115 electronic journal titles including the American Heart Journal, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, BMJ, and many others are available through BUMC MEDLINE Plus/OVID, and NOT PubMed.

In addition, BUMC MEDLINE Plus/OVID includes several evidence based medicine (EBM) resources that are NOT available in any other MEDLINE search system:

  • Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (COCH)
  • ACP Journal Club (ACP)
  • Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCTR)
  • Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE)
