Indexers at NLM read and index the articles
§input appropriate data into each field
§assign 8 - 15 MeSH for each article
§indexing is done at the level of specificity -- the most specific available MeSH is used
Searchers come to the database
with a topic or question
§use field searching to retrieve relevant citations
§decide which MeSH to use in what combination
§the decisions you make determine what information is retrieved
