Policy on Unclaimed Materials

Introduction

The Interlibrary Loan Department (ILL) supports the research needs of the Boston University Medical Center students, faculty, staff, alumni, and corporate accounts. The ILL Department borrows books and other materials, obtains copies of journal articles not owned by the Library, as well as makes photocopies of articles from titles in the Library's collection.

Unclaimed books and articles place a burden on the Library, therefore Library users are responsible for any fees owed for these requests. Individuals with outstanding charges may be denied borrowing privileges, as well as suspension of further Interlibrary Loan and Photocopying services.

Books

Charges will be made for replacement of lost and damaged materials. Your signature on the request form indicates that you accept full replacement cost responsibility for lost or damage to borrowed materials. Student charges will be sent directly to Student Accounts for billing. All other borrowers will be billed by the library and suspended from Interlibrary Loan and other library services until amount is paid in full.

It is important for the Library to maintain positive reciprocal Interlibrary Loan borrowing and lending relationships with other Libraries in order for us to continue to borrow on behalf of all BUMC/BMC users.

Journal Articles Obtained from Other Libraries and In-House Photocopies

Library users who request articles and fail to pick-up upon notification by a library staff member, will be assessed the charge for each unclaimed item.

Failure to pick-up requested articles and pay outstanding fees within 30 days will result in a suspension of further ILL services until the amount is paid in full.
