Policy for Loaning Laptop Computers to Students
The Laptop Loaner program is intended to provide a back-up laptop to those medical campus students required to have laptops, and whose laptop has failed. It is not intended to provide laptops for students for other reasons. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that no personal data, including classwork, is stored on the loaner computer since files will be erased when returned to the Library Computing staff. Instead, students should use external USB portable drives or jump drives (memory sticks) for data storage.
Documentation & Extent of Loan
The period of the loan will be determined by the LRC staff based on the severity of the problem with the student's computer. If a student has turned-in their laptop to an outside repair shop, Library Computing staff must be presented with a repair slip from the shop prior to picking-up the loaner. The period of the loan will not exceed fourteen days, unless the estimated time to complete all repairs has been documented as requiring more than ^M fourteen days.
The Library Computing staff will store all Mac and PC loaner laptops on the 11th floor of the Library in secured lockers. Every loaner will have a dedicated locker and will be tracked using the locker number and the computer serial number associated with that locker. This will simplify the process of retrieving and checking-out the laptops for student use.
How to Obtain a Loaner Laptop
Laptop loaners may be checked out from the 11th floor Computer Help Desk (Room L-1109) between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday. Students may also call (617) 638-5433 between the hours 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to check on the availability of a loaner.
Each laptop in the loaner program will meet the minimum standards expected of required student laptops, and will be configured to support the classes in which they are being used. Every loaner laptop will be configured to use both wireless and Ethernet access to the Internet. However, students must provide their own Ethernet cable if they choose not to use the wireless network. All laptop configurations will include SmartSync.
When a loaner is returned to
the Library Computing staff, it will be re-imaged in preparation of
the next user. The computers will be completely updated and a
fresh image restored at least once each semester.
