Hardware and Software

The Library Computing Labs and classrooms house over 160 IBM-compatible PCs and Macintosh computers with a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software available. See the list below for current holdings.

Hardware
  • L-1102 Hardware
    • 1 Scanning Station
    • 1 – 43 page per minute laser printer with double-sided printing
    • General computing capabilities, Internet and e–mail access, bibliographic indexes and knowledge databases, full text journals and textbooks, computer-assisted instruction programs.
  • L-1105 Hardware
    • 23 IBM-compatible PCs
    • All PC's with SAS (9.3 and 9.4) installed
    • 1 – 43 page per minute laser printer with double-sided printing
    • L-1105 is available as a public computing area when there are no exams scheduled in the L-1101 Testing Center and no classes are scheduled in the room.
  • L-1109 Hardware
    • 10 IBM-compatible PCs
      • 2 ADA PC compatible computers
      • 3 PC's (labeled 07-09) with (ADA Software) Read & Write installed
    • 4 Macintosh computers
    • 1 – 43 page per minute laser printers with double-sided printing
    • General computing capabilities, Internet and e–mail access, bibliographic indexes and knowledge databases, full text journals and textbooks, computer-assisted instruction programs.
  • L-1109B Hardware
    • 19 IBM–compatible PC's
    • This room is reserved for both an accommodation room for exams and class use.

      • 1 PC equpped with a color scanner
      • 20 PC's (labeled 02 - 17) with SAS (9.3 and 9.4) installed

      • 1 Mac equipped with a color scanner
    • 2 – 62 page per minute laser printers with double-sided printing
    • 1 – 43 page per minute laser printer with double-sided printing

  • McNary Learning Center, R-107
    • 30 IBM–compatible PCs
    • All PC's with SAS (9.3 and 9.4) installed

    • Internet and e-mail access, bibliographic and knowledge databases, full text journals and textbooks, computer-assisted instruction programs
    • The McNary Learning Center is 24/7 card-access public computing area when there are no classes scheduled.
Printing and Scanning

The Library Computing Labs (L-1109) area contains 1 laser printers to which all machines are networked. Printing is done using Library copy cards (12 cents per copy).
Scanners are located on the L-11 Testing Center in L-1102, on the 12th Floor (East Concord Street Side), and on the 13th Floor near the elevator lobby area.

Computer Assisted Instruction Software

Many of the computer assisted instruction Software programs are installed locally, requiring use from the Library Computer Labs. In some cases, the resources are available on the Web to those users who have logged into the BU campus network. A link is included for resources that are accessible remotely.

  • BrainStorm, the Interactive Guide to Human NeuroAnatomy, was developed at Stanford University School of Medicine. This program provides review and quiz modules in three sections: Cross Sections -- magnified photographs of stained cross-sections of CNS structures; Gross Dissection -- photographs of dissected brain, brain stem and spinal cord specimens; and Diagrams -- line drawing illustrations of specific structural and functional relationships.

  • PC-SAS System is a comprehensive software program for statistical analysis.
  • SPSS is a comprehensive software program for statistical analysis.
Productivity Software

Most of these software programs are installed locally, requiring users to be in the Library computing lab.

  • Adobe (Mac/PC Scan stations only): Acrobat, Photoshop, Master Collection (12th Floor: 1 Mac / 1 PC (labeled 31))
  • Microsoft: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access (PC only), Publisher (PC only), Visio (L-1110: labeled 231 -235)
